The "Train Jaune"
Emblem of the Catalan Pyrenees with its scarlet and gold colours, the Yellow Train is no ordinary train. First used in 1910, this metric-gauge line, completed in 1927, has broken many records.
To start with, it is the highest train in France, travelling between altitudes of 400 - 1600m.
Amazing locals and visitors alike, around 400,000 passengers travel on it every year. Around 650 engineering structures, including 19 tunnels, 15 bridges and 14 viaducts punctuate the route, which is over 60 kilometres long. Two of these bridges cross the Têt valley. The Séjourné bridge stands 65 metres above the river, whilst the Gisclard bridge runs 80 metres above the valley floor.
Beside these achievements, what makes the Catalans so attached to the Yellow Train is the role it has played in opening up the Cerdagne area and the growth of tourism.
