The Catalan Pyrenees include 8 listed sites, 5 of which constitute truly precious symbols of the ecological wealth of the eastern Pyrenees. These sites are places with such exceptional features that they have been awarded protection at the national level.  The aim of this classification is to conserve the sites’ characteristics, by safeguarding the essence of the places from all attacks.

  • L'étang du Lanoux

    Etang du Lanoux

    At an altitude of 2175m, Etang du Lanoux is one of the great Pyrenean lakes and is a meeting-point for fishing enthusiasts. There is a beautiful view over Carlit, the Pics Pedros and the Coume d'Or.

  • Le Canigou
    Le Canigou

    The Canigou

    Maritime look-out and the first high stronghold inland of the Mediterranean, the Canigou is the doorway between two worlds: the highlands and the Roussillon plain.

    The mountain can be seen from Languedoc, Ariège and the Gérone province and until the 18th century was considered the highest mountain in the Pyrenees, being elevated to the rank of sacred mountain within the Catalan tradition. From the Cady valleys or the Rotja, discover the legends and wealth of the Massif del Canigó, one of the jewels of the Pyrenees, which was listed as a Grand Site de France in 2002.

  • The Camporells cirque

    You are sure to be enchanted by the wooded slopes and glacier lakes surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Cirque des étangs des Camporells. Easy to access, this site is rich in extraordinary flora and fauna much loved by walkers and anglers, and is also a site of livestock grazing and forestry activity.

  • The Bouillouses lakes

    The Bouillouse lakes are the starting point of many hiking trails, of all levels, which will enable you to explore these lakes, of which there are many, including the famous lake where the electric dam supplying the Train Jaune (Yellow Train) is situated. The site is accessible to all (access is regulated in the summer).

  • Les Gorges de la Carança

    Les Gorges de la Carança

    Ces gorges encaissées offrent des randonnées spectaculaires avec ponts de singes, corniches vertigineuses… Vous sentirez-vous le courage d'atteindre le pic de l'Enfer ou du Géant ?

    Les Gorges de la Carança sont accessibles en voiture et en train jaune (départ de Thuès-les-bains). Parking payant : 2 €.

    Pour les itinéraires plus longs, possibilités d'hébergement au refuge de la Carança.
